Dal Bati is a traditional dish from the North-Western state of Rajasthan, India. Bati (Dough shaped in balls) is cooked by placing among hot coals or wood. The cooked dough balls are eaten by smashing with your hand, drizzling few tablespoons of ghee and adding spicy dal (lentil) on top. Eaten with chutney or Indian mango pickles.

Whenever I used to visit my grand parents at their village in India, I always used to look forward to eating some awesome home cooked meals cooked with fresh picked vegetables from their farm. The vegetables were picked once they were ready – be it fresh tomatoes, corn, mangoes etc. The fresh picked produce has so much flavor compared to the ones available in the supermarkets that travel long distances and has to be picked when it is not completely ready. The food always tastes better when it is ripened on the vine or plant or tree. I am really enjoying the fresh farm produce that I get every week from the food choice box that includes local Washington grown produce.

Last weekend, we stayed at the Quinault Lodge in the Olympic National Forest and had a really good time. We had not been on vacation for a while and really enjoyed the much needed break. We visited Port Townsend which is a nice little town and ate at the Silverwater cafe for lunch. The lunch was excellent. Then we found a cupcake place just around the corner from the restaurant that also served gluten free cupcakes. My wife and daughter were craving for dessert and we were pleasantly surprised to find gluten-free cupcake selection at the Perfect Endings cupcake place. Then we had a leisurely stroll around the town window shopping the various types of stores.

The spiced lentil with dumpling recipe is made by cooking the lentils in spices and adding the dumplings made with wheat flour or chappati flour.
This weekend I felt homesick. It has been more than three years since I have been to India to see my family – my parents, sister and relatives. The weather is starting to cool down with rains already on the way in Seattle. It brought back memories of the monsoons in India. When it rains there, it pours, literally. The streets would be flooded with water to the point where everything would close down. We would watch the rains from our classroom windows hoping they would close the school early and let us go home. As kids, we loved the rain. There was just a different feel to the environment around us. We would run around in the rain and make paper boats and let them float in the water puddles on the ground.
Once the school was over, my sister and I would take the rickshaw home. Even though we had a raincoat and umbrella, we would still get wet since the rickshaw would be shared by 5 other kids. When we got home, I could smell the aroma of the food my mom was making for us. She would make us spicy dal (lentil) with dhokli (dumplings) in it. We would devour the food and would instantly warm us. Nothing like eating this recipe on a cold, rainy and bleak day.
In order to make the dough, use white wheat flour (chappati or roti flour is preferable). You should be able to get the chappati or roti flour in any Indian grocery store or you can buy it online
